Counseling and Therapy
CCAPT offers expert
assessment and therapy for families and children at risk for or affected
by abuse. Most communities have specialized
counselors equipped to help families with abuse issues.
We feel it is
important to offer specialized counseling for children affected by
abuse as a way to improve their lives and prevent them from
becoming abusive later in life.
Victims of abuse who are believed, protected
from future abuse, and are encouraged to share their experiences with
those they trust are much
less likely to be affected by their abuse as adults.
Whether a child
needs help with an abusive experience depends upon the type and length
of the abuse, how their family and community responded
to abuse, and what they experienced before the abuse occurred.
If a
child continues to show symptoms of abuse after it has stopped is likely
in need of increased support and possibly some counseling
sessions.
It is important to choose a counselor who has experience working
with abused children. It is ok to ask a potential counselor what their
experience
is. How many children have they worked with? What ages of children
have they worked with? How many children who have experienced this
kind of
abuse have they worked with? What approach will they take etc.
